Monday, Sivan 13, 5781. May 24, 2021.  Shalom! World. Pardubice lies in the centre of the East Bohemia on the confluence of the River Elbe and the River Chrudimka. The oldest preserved written reference to its existence dates back to the end of the 13th century, with Pardubice becoming a town sometime around 1340. Back then it was owned by the Lords of Pardubice, the first Archbishop of Praha, advisor and friend to Emperor Charles IV, a distinguished European personality of that time.  Pardubice began to change for the better after the fall of the communist regime. Pardubice has genuinely flourished in recent years. The Old Town has been reconstructed, in particular the chateau, whose dilapidated ruins have been transformed into a beautiful historic monument.  Pardubice is very near Praha, just 63 minutes by train. Tuesday, Sivan 7, 5781. May 18, 2021. Shalom! World.  Pardubice Castle. Prihadek. Pardubice - Czech Republic. The first traces of a mansion within the chateau area originate in the late 13th century. The most visible reconstruction took place during the reign of the House Pernstejn at the brink of the 15th and 16th centuries. The former castle was transformed to a chateau. Around it, massive ramparts were build. Today there is no other castle in Central Europe with such parameters and extent of preservation. The Palace displays the preserved valuable relics of early-Renaissance wall paintings, two cassette ceilings and a number of the other architectonic elements. In 1560, the Pernstejns sold both the chateau and the mansion to the King. Latest renovations came in 1570s. The original interior has not survived. World.  Kovanice is near Praha: train to Nymburk 44min and more 12min from Nymburk to Kovanice.  Nymburk did not have its own cemetery, but used the cemetery that was established in 1830 in nearby Kovanice, where Franz Kafka's grandmother is buried. Kovanice's Jewish population can be traced back to 1723 when were 5 Jewish  families living in the town. This rose to 7 families in 1780. It may be no coincidence that Jewish life in Kovanice developed after the expulsion of the Jews from nearby Nymburk. There are many instances where the expelled Jews settled in the surrounding villages of the town that they hadto leave. It suggests that the history of the Jews of Nymburk and Kovanice, should be comsidered as one.  By 1829 there were 70 Jews living in Kovanice, but by 1880, when there was a congregation in Nymburk that was about to build a Synagogue, the Jewish population of Kovanice had fallen to 33, while the Jewish populati...

  Tuesday, Iyar 22, 5781. May 4, 2021. Shalom! World.  Villa Löw-Beer. Drobného 22. Brno - Czech Republic. The Löw-Beer in Brno is the youngest branch of the Museum of Brno Region. From 1913 to 1939 it was owned by Alfred Löw-Beer, Jewish industrialist and trader in textiles, who gave his daughter Greta part of the plot of land at the end of the 1920s, where she and her husband Fritz Tugendhat had a house built between 1929 and 1930 - today the world-famous Villa Tugendhat.  The restoredLÖw-Beer VIlla houses a permanent exhibition entitled The World of the Brno Bourgeoisie Around the Löw-Beerand Tugendhats. There is a public library. The exposition is complemented by temporary exhibitions at the Celnice Gallery (Customs House).
