Wednesday, Nissan 2, 5777. March 29, 2017. Shalom! World. On March 29, 1516, the Venetian Republic created the first ghetto on a small island, in the north-western of Cannaregio. The residentes were removed and replaced within a week by Jews already in Venice. This was a period in which the city sought to keep a watchful eye on all foreigners: the French, English and Spanish embassies were also relegated to Cannaregio. There had been a metal foundry ( ghèto ) in the parish, which has traditionally been the source of the name, although the etmology is far from clear. The French writer Alice Beecker-Ho presentes a number of valid alternatives: gouda-(h ), separation and ghetta , herd. Jews within Venice therefore found a secure place to live despite the restrictions imposed on them, and were soon joined by others fleeing persecution in central Europe. What i have dreamed is happening now! Oh, G'd in heaven! - Shuddering i shall cry: what for and why did my people die? Not in a war, not in battle... the young, the old, and women and babies so little - are no more, no more: wring your hands! Thus i'll cry in sorrow both day and night: What for, my Lord, dear G'd, Why? Itzhak Katzenelson. One of Poland's Jewish poets and dramatists who wrote in both Hebrew and Yiddish. Prior to World War II he wrote mostly for children. During the war he was consigned to the Warsaw Ghetto and later to the camp at Vitel in France, whence he was sent to Konzentrationslager Auschwitz where he perished. Shalom! Aleichem. The City Where I Want To Live By Adam Zagajewski The city is quiet at dusk, when pale stars waken from theier swoon, and resounds at noon with the voices of ambitious philosophers and merchants bearing velvet from the East. The flames of conversation burn there, but not pyres. Old churches, the mossy stones of ancient prayer, are both its ballast and its rocket ship. It is a just city where foreigners aren't punished, city quick to remember and slow to forget, tolerating poets, forgiving prophets for their hopeless lack of humor. The city was based on Chopin's preludes, taking from them onlly joy and sorrow. Small hills circle it in a wide colar; ash trees grow there, and the slim poplar, chief justice in the state of trees.
