JACOB JR, MY JEWISH WORLD - KONZENTRATIONSLAGER PLASZOW. KRAKOW/POLAND

Image
Sunday, Iyar 7, 5775. April 26, 2015. Shalom! World. Starting in October 1942, Jews were deported from the Krakow guetto to the Konzentrationslager Plaszow in the southern outskirts of town. Six months later, the guetto was liquidated and all of its residents were sent to the now-notorious camp. Over the course of the next two years, thousands would die from disease, starvation and mass executions. In early 1945, the remainning prisioners comenced a death march to KZ Auschwitz, where they would be killed on arrival. The nazis destroyed the camp as they retread, so there was nothing left for the Soviet troops to liberate when they arrived on 20 January 1945. Not much remains from this Konzentrationslager, where thousand of prisioners died, from hard labour, hunger, disease and execution. Built on the site of a Jewish cemetery, it operated as a labor camp in 1942 and was converted to a KZ in January 1944. Nowadays, the vast site consists of a rolling hills and unkempt

JACOB JR, MY JEWISH WORLD. OLD TOWN (STARE MIASTO), WARSZAWA/POLAND

Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski) YOM RISHOM,  30 NISSAN, 5775, SUNDAY, APRIL 19, 2015 Shalom! World. A labyrinth of winding cobblestone streets, ornate tenement facades and picturesque plazas with plenty of Old World charm, it's easy to understand why the Old Town in Warszawa's top tourist area. Entirely rebuilt after the Warszawa Uprising of 1944, the Old Town is also symbolic of Warszawa's rise from the ruins of WWII and Warszawaians' pride in their city. When US General Dwight Eisenhower visited Warszawa after the war he was moved to comment, "I have seen many towns destroyed, but nowwhere have i been faced with such destruction." Buried beneath twenty million cubic metres of rubble the city resembled a shaterred shell: over half the population had been killed and 85% of the city razed to the ground. The old Town had been hit with particular nazi efficiency, and by the time the Red Army rolled across the river it was little more than a smouder

Tuesday, Nissan 25, 5775. April 14, 2015 Omer: Day 10 - Tifferet Sheb'Gevurah Shalom! World. Noworolski Cafe, Rynek Glówny 1. You won't find a more inspiring spot to write your postcards, than this grand Café, tucked in the Sukiennice. With outdoor tables in its arcades, it has seen many a famous regular - Lenin for one. The sumptuous fin-de-siècle interior gives you the impression of sitting inside a wedding cake, decoration, location and heritage allowing the management to charge three times the going rate for coffee. Breakfasts, salads, cakes, soups and main courses are all quite reasonably priced on the terrace, though.   High levels: the view, confortable, price and food. Shalom! Aleichem. JACOB JR, MY JEWISH WORLD. JACOB - FREUD. VIENA/ÁUSTRIA

Image
Yom rishom, Nissan 23, 5775. April 12, 2015. Shalom! World.

JACOB JR, MY JEWISH WORLD. CAFÉS: TO DRINK, TO EAT, TO READ, TO THINK AND OTHERS THINGS. HARD ROCK CAFE. WARSZAWA/POLAND.

Shalom! World. Hard Rock Café, ul. Zlota 59, Warszawa/Poland. Sure you don't need to see Freddie Mercury's red leather pants to enjoy a night out, but it certainly doens't hurt. The Hard Rock Cafe's large downstairs bar area is jumping at night even when live rock shows aren't on the agenda. The endless bar mixes up a long list of colourful cocktails for a heavilly ex-pat crowd taking in paraphernalia like a wellworn Bee Gees guitar and a black leather outfit that formerly clung to Madonna's early 90s frame. When music is on tap (live concerts every wednesday starting at 20:30) the crowed becomes more varied (and youthful) but just as devoted to the strum of a Fender. Shalom! Aleichem. JACOB JR, MY JEWISH WORLD. PALACE OF CULTURE AND SCIENCE. WARSZAWA/POLAND

PALACE OF CULTURE AND SCIENCE (PALAC KULTURY I NAUKI). WARSZAWA/POLAND Sunday, Nissan 16, 5775. April 5, 2015. Shalom! World. For all the agressive westernisation that has overcome Warszawa, the four decades of communism have yet to be completely erased from the face of Warszawa. You couldn't miss this hulking giant of a landmark if you tried. Originally commisioned by Stalin as a 'gift from the Soviet people' the 231 metre structure actually takes its inspiration from the capitalist world, named the Empire State Building, but, believe or not, was specifically designed to include influences from all of Poland's architectural styles. Stalin had sent a secret delegation to New York to learn both about the building and American construction methods, though the outbreak of WWII meant that it wasn't until 1952 that his architects were able to commence putting their knowledge into practice. Lev Rudynev, the brains behind the equally monstrous Lomonos
