JACOB JR, MY JEWISH WORLD. STARA SYNAGOGUE. KRAKOW/POLAND.

Stara Synagogue. Krakow/Poland.

Poland's oldest surviving Synagogue and historic seat of the local Jewish authorities, this large, red-brick building was coverted to a Museum of Judaism after war-time destruction. Founded in the early 1400s no-one wknows exactly when - the Syangogue was rebuilt with Renaissance touches in 1570 after one of several fires, and added to over the centuries. Displays in its two-floor permanent exhibition cover local Jewish life and culture - talit gadol, kipah and various cerimonial items are well presented and explained in English. It now houses a branch of the Museum of the History of Krakow. The prayer hall contains the original aron kodesh (the niche in the eastern wall where Torah scrolls are kept) and a reconstruted bimah (raised platform at the centre of the Synagogue where the Torah is read). The striking bimah plattaform is a reconstruction - the original staged  many historic speeches, including one by Polish national hero Tadeusz Kosciuszko (1746-1817) in 1794 urging Jews to join the Uprising.  Adjacent rooms are dedicated to Jewish traditions and art, while upstairs there's a photographic exhibit, relating the nazi occupation.

Shalom! Aleichem.
