JACOB JR, MY JEWISH WORLD. THE REAR SYNAGOGUE. TREBIC/CZECH REPUBLIC
Yom Sheni, Adar II 25, 5776. April 4, 2016.
Shalom! World.
The Rear Synagogue was built around 1669, when the construction of another chapel was required due to the increasing influx of Jewish inhabitants coming mostly from Eastern Europe. The Synagogue was severely damaged when the authorities issued orders to demolish it. The reconstruction of the Synagogue could only come about later in the years 1705 - 1707 during which period the Synagogue was extended northwards.
In 1926, the SUBAK Company bought the Synagogue from the Jewish religious community, and used it as a storehouse. After the years 1945 it served to store of fruits and vegetables. Only in the years 1989 - 1997 did it undergo extensive reconstruction and was opened to the public. In 2003 the Synagogue was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as an integral part of the Jewish town. Today it is used as an exhibition centre and concert hall.
Shalom! Aleichem.
