Shalom! World.
The Zidovsky Hrbitov (Jewish Cemetery) of Trebic was founded at the present site in the first half of the 17th century. The existence of the cemetery on the northern hillside of Hradek was mentioned for the first time in the chronicles in 1636, neverthless, in reality it must had been a bit older. It was presumably founded in the 1920s and was connected to the Jewish Quarter via a wagon trail.
In 1888, the cemetery was enlarged to the presented area of 11 772 m². According to unverified information there are supposed to be 11. 000 graves and 3.000 stones, of which the oldest dates back to 1631. Many famous figures from Trebic, such as rabbis J.J. Pollak and S. Pollak, are buried there. In 1903, a new ceremonial hall (Tahara), where one's respects are paid, was erected near the cemetery entrance.
The most valable and most interesting part of the hall's furnishings is the colourful, beautiful decorated ritual washbasin, so called Kijor. Dignified funerals for ghetto citizens were taken care of by the so-called Holy Brotherhood (Chevra Kadisha), whose main activity was the care of the deceased. The Brotherhood was also able to organise charities and other events thanks to voluntary contributions in the Synagogues.
On the cemetery premises, you can also find a memorial to World War I Jewish soldiers (1922) and a memorial to the victims of the World War II ethnic genocide (1957).
