JACOB JR, MY JEWISH WORLD. HUMPOLEC, KALISTE AND GUSTAV MAHLER / CZECH REPUBLIC.
Friday, Cheshvan 10, 5780. November 8, 2019.
Shalom! World.
Humpolec (city) and Kaliste (village) - Czech Republic.
House No. :Mahler's birthplace. Mahler was born in his house (his father's inn and brandy distillery) on July 7, 1860, and spent the first three months of his life here.
Until the 1990's the house was still a village of Kaliste and restored by the "Musica noster amor" Foundation. It is now a music center with recital hall, and open to the public.
There are ten or twelve villages named Kaliste in the Czech Republic. Mahler's Birthplace is nine kilometres northwest of Humpolec, a small town about 22 km northwest of Jihlava.
Humpolec can be reached either directly from the freeway or over the country road Route 523 from Jihlava. The street in Humpolec which leads to Kaliste is called Nerudova. If you drive eastward on Na Kazamach street, there is a small sign "Rodny dum G. Mahlera", which indicates the left turn into Nerudova street.
In Kaliste the Mahler House is one of the first buildings in the village. It is on the right side of the street , easy to find.
Shalom! Aleichem.
